How to to plan for a new website for your creative business
Ever get lost choosing a beautiful new website template, or even hiring a web designer, and then realize you have no idea what goes on your site? I’ve done it myself. I’ve sat aside time to redesign my own website, without planning first. I didn’t go well!
Whether you are DIYing a website or working with a website designer, here are some things to plan before getting started.
Define your target client
Figure out who it is you want to work with. Look at your last 1-2 years of clients to see who you really loved working together with, and who got the most out of the services you provide. Make some notes about what types of things this person likes, and what made the experience beneficial for you and your clients.
Decide what action you want viewers to take
What is the ideal next step? Really think about how you work best. If you are comfortable on the phone, maybe you want a consult. If you’d prefer to just get a name and send out pricing, request information via a form and have the pricing in a PDF or private web page ready to go. It could also be something with less commitment, like having your viewers download a lead magnet, or follow you on social media.
Perfect your “elevator pitch”
This is simply a short statement that clearly describes what you do. Some people call it a brand statement. Whatever you call it, it needs to be direct. I visit so many websites that leave me wondering what is it they provide. If viewers don’t know this, they will leave.
Know what problem you solve for your clients
Sales are easiest when you are solving a problem for your ideal client. Really think about what you do for clients that is different than others in your field. If you schedule portrait sessions in a families home for newborn photography, and are an expert at calming babies, you can talk about how mom can have a chance to relax, while you take beautiful photos in an environment where the family is already comfortable.
Once you’ve figured this out, you can write out your content and gather images. We go through this process with every client through a 5 part Brand Assignment. Signup for our free 14 page guide, 5 Must Haves for your Website, to get more guidance on this process.
