How many of your clients first view your website on a large computer screen like this? As designers, creatives, photographers, we'd like to think most, but it's becoming less and less true. The average is 55% of viewers are on mobile but we have to assume that this is going to be higher and higher as time goes on.

Open your website on your phone and see how it looks. Can you read all the text? Does the flow of how you go through it work easily? Does it look like mobile wasn't an afterthought?

Let's talk about portfolios!. Many of my clients have portfolios or galleries on their websites. This is common for so many different types of businesses: interior designers, theater professionals, photographers, painters, floral designers, event planners and more. It's difficult to pick and choose your best work for a portfolio and comes with so many questions.

How many images should you have in each portfolio? I typically recommend 10-25

How many categories of portfolios should you have? This depends on how many images and what you do. I prefer to keep it to 4-8 for most clients, but there are exceptions. I recently worked with a wedding planner who has years of experience and we decided to feature 12+ weddings at different venues.

How should your portfolio be displayed? In the last few years with mobile becoming more the norm for first website visits, I tend to favor a masonry style gallery (see in the image here) since these adapt well to different screen sizes and often can be set to expand to a larger image on click.

How long does it take to have a website designed?

How long does it take to have a website designed? This is a great question that I get asked a lot. The answer is: it depends.

A typical website of 5-10 pages where the content has been submitted before the project, and the client can respond within 2 business days on all feedback points, takes about 8 weeks. I usually say 6-10 weeks since sometimes it's not realistic for a client to stick to this type of schedule.

I do need all the content upfront but I can be flexible with the response time on feedback. For some people, it's simple to make a quick decision but for others you need to sit with the questions and visuals given for a little bit of time. We can definitely work with this, but it adds time to a project.

I do encourage we stick to at most a 10 week time schedule from the Strategy Call to the time we launch, if that works for my clients. I find the creative process works better if we keep it rolling, for all of us.

Besides the project time, there is usually a 4-8 week wait time to get on our calendar before our kickoff Strategy Session. During this wait time though, the discovery process is worked on, so we are truly ready to kickoff on the start date.
