As I mentioned last week, I’m in the process of going through photos and adding them to my new portfolio website. After a wedding I tend to have a selection of photos that I consider the best. When I go back through the entire set later I sometimes find what I call sleepers. Somehow these photos didn’t really catch my eye earlier and suddenly I love them.

Here is a photo of one of the wedding guests holding the bride and groom’s baby daughter. The contrast of this substantial man with the delicate precious little one is what I adore here.

Katy and Aaron’s wedding continued at the Lakewood Arts Center, in Lake Oswego. It’s a beautiful brick building, and the trees were all changing colors outside. Inside the couple had an intimate wedding reception. Here’s a few favorites from their first dance.

As the sun set, the dancing started. It began with the children just having so much fun on the dance floor, and then the adults joined in. The last photo of this post is a couple that just really knew how to dance. Watching them made me want to whisk my hubby off to ballroom dance lessons!

I usually don’t blog wedding formals. It’s no secret that my brides hire me for my candid photography, and typically don’t want to dedicate a lot of time to formals. After a busy summer of weddings, I have had a lot of brides ask me if we even have to do formal shots. My answer is that we don’t have to but I strongly recommend it. In a few years you, or your parents, may really wish a few shots of everyone together were taken, and we can do it quickly.

I thought I’d blog this series because it was particularly fun. During the bridal party portraits, there was lots of laughter. It’s the moments in between that I adore. You’ll see what I mean in the photos below.

Alphonse & Danica had given me a long list of formals with family and bridal party. The wedding got off to a late start, and they wanted to get things back on schedule, so they completely threw out the list, taking off to Esther Short Park with their bridal party.

It was my first trip to this park, and it’s incredible. Though I live in the western suburbs of Portland, I’ll definitely recommend Esther Short to my clients for engagement sessions and portraits. It is in an urban part of Vancouver. The park itself has lots of big shade trees, a gazebo, another large structure, play areas, and plenty of open lawn.

I try to keep formals casual and fun. We took the truly formal formals (straight line, look at the camera… sort of thing) and then squeezed in some relaxed ones.
